Snow Covered Walkway

In 2008 Rio-Tinto Alcan's continuous improvement call to action initiative “Blitz Kaizen” focused on improving Vehicle/Pedestrian interaction, Working at Heights, and Hazardous Energy control. The initiatives are best practices and focus to eliminate “A” Hazards. Lapointe Engineering Ltd. assisted the Blitz Kaizen committee in project management and engineering to minimize the “A” Hazard.

Addressing the Vehicle/Pedestrian interaction Lapointe Engineering designed a covered walkway, adjacent to a building, to protect employees from falling snow and icicles. The covered walkway provides an overhead protection from the weather year round. Our scope for this project was to provide a design for a covered walkway that would be efficient to construct and install. The wooden covered walkway was designed in 8 ft long sections that allowed prefabrication of the units inside their wood shop. This kept the employees out of the elements and allowed for easy transportation and installation. The wood design allowed for practical construction and the required protection from falling snow and ice.
