In July 2007 Rio-Tinto Alcan Inc.'s 'A' Casting Department approached Lapointe Engineering Ltd.'s Structural Department with storage space concerns for their frozen aluminum storage pans. In order to free up floor space and provide a clutter free working environment for the employees, a steel storage rack was designed for 4500 lb and 2100 lb steel storage pans.
Our project scope was to provide a design for a storage rack that complied with required codes and standards associated with steel design, and that would support six steel storage pans. Research on the existing use of the pans and storage facilities was completed to provide a preliminary design. Then a structural analysis using computer-modeling software was completed to determine the final design.
A design drawing was completed and issued in October of 2007 to allow for the construction and installation of the steel storage rack.
