ABB – Relocation of Duct Bank and Cables
Kitimat, B.C., Rio Tinto Alcan Aluminum Smelter - In preparation for the installation of a new substation it was necessary to relocate approximately 80 existing cables around the construction area. These cables provided control, protection, power and metering for 5 potlines and 4 switching stations as well as plant telephone, fire alarms, and computer network. LEL was the prime consultant for civil and electrical design of the duct bank and termination buildings providing a bypass for these cables. The concrete duct bank was 400m long and contained 32 conduits. The challenge for design and construction of the duct bank was that it runs through a brownfield site that was still in service. In addition to facility design, our work included: Cable inventory explorations and Quality Assurance inspections for the civil works.
